I have a few ideas for extensions, that will allow the layout to have a phase 1 to allow trains to run - mainly dmu, and possibly 2 or 3 coach suburbans with either a 2-6-4T (I have two of them) at the head or maybe a C16, Class 24 or a 26, which will have a out and back reverse loop that could be moved around the shed as the layout grows, but a least have something to play with.

I have plenty of coffee in stock ready for the great escape

If SWMBO likes the layout then that's definitely the main point in favour of keeping it, as you'll be able to get away with a lot more 'taking of liberties' with it (ie, spending money on it) than if she were against it. For the moment at least, I'm hanging on to my 00 gauge layout in the loft as otherwise I'd have nothing to play with/operate at least until the 0 gauge garage layout build reaches a point where I can run things, and it's not even got off the ground yet. Another point is that I have a number of 00 gauge loco's of which there is no 0 gauge equivalent (Bulleid's "Leader", English Electric GT3 for example) and I doubt that'll change, so I'm not wanting to part with them, and I'm not up for scratch building them in 0 gauge either. Just keep the 00 gauge layout and extend if you want, building an 0 gauge 'portable' for exhibition/outside use on fine days. (....and you DO have a few fine days in Scotland, it's not always cold and wet!).:giggle::giggle::giggle:

As it is, as Keith says, you've got a working layout to play with. If you fancy making a tail chaser for exhibiting, make the boards for that but keep the existing layout as is for home, and the new boards simple for storage. You may need to compromise to make it look realistic but that shouldn't be problem for a chap of your calibree.:thumbup:

    Decisions, decisions...

You could always turn it into a goods depot layout ! ;)

As Pete said, build a set of interchangeable double track curves that are used on the layout at exhibitions but store under the layout in the shed. This could be something to consider.

    Cheers, Gary.

Cheers guys, I think keeping the layout is the better option, and I believe making it a more permanent fixture is probably the way to go as well, which allow me to be a bit more creative with the city scape.
The main decision is I'm not sure whether to keep the layout as a terminus or make it a through station. Originally I didn't add the reverse crossover as the second line was supposed to be a headshunt for the station pilot to release the loco from Platforms 3 & 4, the DMU's made this type of move redundant. Keeping the operation as a single line and resurecting the steam & diesel loco hauled operations would make for different operations. Giving interesting movement further down the line with passing loops etc at stations.
Think I will need Yorkie's help on the signaling side of things, as its part of the railway I have convinently ignored most of my life, but would like to install working signaling and maybe even interlocked as well. I'll not go as far as installing high voltage zappers in the handsets for transgressors :avatar:

If the station remains a terminus, then it could easily fit into the corner

    Not to scale

Position 1 in the rear corner of the shed, with uninterupted access to the rest of the long wall
Position 2 just enough space (I think) to fit the layout in before the entrance area.

I think I need to buy the full version of anyrail and learn how to use it.

    Hi Gary

If I keep the center area clear (ish) then I should be able to fit a 4 board modular layout - e.g. Another Bridge (Toto's standard modular board size is approx 54" x 20 - 28" - varies greatly on which tape measure he used). I already have two traverser modules, so fully operational use in the shed I can have two scenic boards and two traversers (4 x 4'6" = 18ft) or 3 scenic and a traverser. However upto 4 scenic boards could be handled but not fully operated, but the end sections can be assembled and tested on thier own. Toto and I did envisage building two 6ft traversers as the current 48" storage area is a little tight for O gauge - I can't fit a 26 + 2 x Mk1's within the storage area. These traversers would be for exhibitions only but would be built to operate etc as thier 4'6" counter part.

Now if Toto builds a big enough shed, say from Saughton to Dundee..., you won't have that trouble ! :scratchchin::avatar::avatar:

Buy the full version of Anyrail. If you have used the free download, you'll be a master at the paid for product !

    Cheers, Gary.
