    Hi Timbersurf

Price took the pole position, at £15 for 4 4ft by 18" ish by 50mm thick or 8 x 25 mm thick compared with 1 x A3 sheet for the same price plus p&p.
It's a bit messy, but then so am I, especially when plaster and paint are involved. All the DIY superstores around here used to stock the pink HD foam boards but for some reason they have stopped. The yellow Kingspan is available in 8 x 4 sheets, not the easiest to fit in the boot of a saloon car, it also used to be available in 48x18 inch sheets but again they seem to have stopped stocking them. I used the Kingspan on Victoria Road, and cuts easily with the bandsaw (so does the polystyrene foam) but damaged easily with a finger, so had no great advantage over the Expanded polystyrene, and was dearer.

Applied some grey paint to to thew fresh rocks laid today - ran out of paint in the small pots, I do have a 2.5 litre tin, but I'm not decanting into the smaller pots in the house, I know my limitations, and SWMBO will put up with most things, but I'm only allowed to spill paint indoors when I'm decorating.

Second coat required, then the wash can be applied.

Two bits of foam glued together to start the rear hills, a third will be added, these bits are removable for construction, detailing etc and will be glued in place when finished.

Added a bit more texture to the upper areas, and added some loose rocks

I used cat litter (fresh not re-used), just have to wait for the PVA too dry

The rocks at the front seemed too much, so have been thinned down.

Second coat of paint applied  I bought silk instead of matt.

Tried the black wash, and it didn't matt it down, so applied a coat of matt acrylic varnish.

Then the usual grey high lights

About ready for stains and flocks

My doggie (or cat for that matter) wouldn't know - he went to the vets for a checkup and woke minus a few bits. You can tell it was the wife and daughter that took them to the vets. And SWMBO wonders why I sleep very lightly. :scratchchin:

Started on the rear section with the syncline and fault.

Angle of the rocks made similar to the other side of the cutting, then at the fault, reversed the other way.
All held in place with hot glue - apply the hot glue to the casting and not the foam other wise the foam melts .

Placed the section in place and marked up the gulley section where the foul and cut away the offending pieces.

Next up is to fill the gaps between the castings and apply the plaster bandage, and probably base coat most of it before finally fixing in place to the gulley section.

Gap filling completed - well I'll evaluate it after painting (read I was getting fed up of mixing plaster :avatar:).

    And first base coat applied.

And the fault / small water fall

Now waiting for the paint to dry to apply a second coat, then a layer of matt acrylic varnish.

Tried adding Acrylic Matt Medium to the emulsion to see if it would flatten the shine, it did a bit but not far enough. So a coat of Matt varnish was applied - I then had to wait for it all to dry.

While at Hobbycraft today getting supplies for our leader, I picked up (and paid for) a tube of Yellow Ochre paint, to try for Iron staining - what do you think

Finally dried, black wash applied - another wait to dry, then the dry br4ushing with the Dove Grey and Silver mist

Yes - the first photo is on the side that can't bee seen, so if I screwed up it would be less of an issue.

The stream / gulley will need a bit, plus green.

I will also try dry brushing to see the effect.

Time for bed tho - see you in the morning.

Just getting ready to set off to our leaders abode, but before leaving I thought I glue the rear rocks in place.

Again Gorilla glue was used, with blocks of foam used to wedge the rocks into the correct place

When I get back I'll be able to mix plaster to fill in the gaps between the rocks and the gulley section, then paint it up.

    Paul

    PS Toto I'm leaving now

Started work on the rocks, firstly adding the final 50mm section of foam, glued in place with gorilla glue, and wedged tight against the other section.
After approx 30 min I added the plaster bandage across the joins, and then to the sides as required

Next plaster, and tissue dipped in plaster was added to give additional testure.

Finally, Slate Grey base coat was applied (two coats).

The baseboard was turned round and a grey mix of plaster made up and applied to Toto's Gulley (well Toto did lay the initial plaster strips on the gulley).

Then Base coat added once the plaster was dry

Attention now switched to the front section, the black wash has turned out very dark, so time to lighten it with dry brushing.

First off, some base coat was drybrshed on, followed by the usual Dove Grey and Silver mist for final high lights - giving .....

    and some close ups

    Time for bed I think

Bed ! ....... BED !!! ....... we want more ....... lots of it. :avatar: I love the effects that the dry brushing of the highlights gives. It's amazing how much more the rock is pulled out into the scene. A lot more realistic than many rock scenes that I've seen before. Really terrific.

You'll need to do a " how to " technique tutorial on the above processes show the finish between each of the various paint applications. I think folks would like and benefit from it.

    Cheers
