Just a quick line to say Merry Christmas to everyone and thank you for all the inspiration to get back into modelling. My turnouts arrived last week along with a local purchase of bulk streamline Flexi. Can't wait to start putting it together. I will use the break to think over the track plan a little more and then start 'playing'! Just got back from NZ with my lady and now off to QLD to spend the crazy day with her and my parents. Hopefully I'll come out the other side okay!

Here it is; the bare ingredients ready to be assembled:

And what a sight to savour.

An open baseboard, pile of track and a load of turnouts. Gets the hair on the back of your neck rising. I'll look forward to seeing what becomes of it all.

Mind the blow by blow account. We all like a good mystery on here. :avatar:

Hope the big day goes well at your parents. Have an excellent Christmas.

    Hi everyone

Getting ready to go back to work...and have some time to do some track laying (yep I have more time to myself when not on holidays!). Had a great trip to NZ and some good time in QLD on the beach.

Been looking at my baseboards. Any ideas on how I should run the wiring. Options seem to be below the baseboard, sandwiched between foam, in slots cut in the foam. All have pros and cons.

Leaning towards sub base board for fault finding. Just not sure if my drill bits will be long enough to go through the foam and then the ply when running droppers...

At this stage I'm going to assemble my plan on DC without modifying the electrofrogs until I'm happy with how it works. From what I can glean this is okay but may short out on DCC as the point rail is the opposite polarity to the closest wheels. Also pretty keen to lectric' my points with tortoise products after testing.

Remember, You will have to lift the track again to make the points DCC friendly by cutting the links under or with out lifting the other option is to cut the rails later with the Dremel cutting Disc a couple of sleepers ahead of the insulated section
And then add the wire for switching the frog polarity.
And solder in the links to the switch rails not that hard have done a lot of points on the club layout this way

Looking forward to seeing the Golden Spike Reidy:thumbup:

Hi Reidy, regarding wiring the layout I watched one of Paul Chetters demo videos on youtube and he has laid copper tape alongside the tracks and soldered his droppers to that, ,course, you must make sure everything works as it should before burying the wiring :D

    Cheers, Pete.

Clever. Hadn't thought of that. How does copper tape handle the current I wonder?

I have heard that some 'brands' of the copper tape are not that reliable... If you go down this route, purchase from a reputable distributor... ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

    Hello chaps.

    Tracks down.

Took some time to draw up my ideas. You can see where the goods and stock yards are in the foreground here with the station behind 4911. Beyond the station I have drawn some contours to represent a down slope. I want to model a small creek running behind the last wagon under the tracks and down the hill:

The loco yard. The afternoon goods and any spare locos can sleepover here. Refuelling facility on the closest spur. Locked gates and cyclone fences to dissuade any buffoonery from the local Tumutarian youth. You'll notice a precipice on the siding. JUst couldn't make it work the way I wanted with the 90 degree angle.

Looking towards the timber mill siding. The branch line disappears to the fiddle yard behind. Please excuse the hideous rolling stock:

I have a plan to have the highest part of the layout where the mill is with the branch climbing into Tumut behind the mill through a cutting. The ground will slope away in between the loco shed and the station. Getting it to look right will be a challenge indeed.

Next, source some foam and point motors. Then mount the back scene board before it gets to hard to pull the tables out.

Some good progress there Reidy.

    Hi again

It's official. Tumut will have DCC Sound!

Went with NCE and ECU Loksound Select. Mind blowing how real it makes the whole experience.

    Sound is great.
I have just had a running session on Jack's layout with the GP40 and S4 making a racquet ! :D The US sound decoders are very, very cheap compared to the English decoders. I fitted two locos for under $160.00 which included speakers and postage from the US ! You only get one UK sound decoder for the same money, then postage on top !

    Cheers, Gary.

Well I must admit I'm a little lost with the frogs and chips gents!

I'll have to look further into the decoders when I do the others Gary. It was an impulse buy at the time, but I'm happy with the sound project and can change it anytime I want with the ESU.

I had a busy weekend destroying the train room.

I found some styrene sheets on the local classifieds so I grabbed a few. Its the lightweight stuck-together-bean-bag type of styrene and I've managed to turn the backyard into a ski field. Originally I wanted to use extruded styrene, but I'm happy to give this a go at the price! (read, nothing).

Luckily, with the use of a heat gun I can seal the edges of freshly cut 'white christmas' relatively well before I attempt to take it indoors. I've had a play with the wire brush and the heat gun. A hot wire cutter would be handy :scratchchin:

I bit the bullet and manoeuvred the bench work around the room to attach the backscene supports. I recycled a ply cabinet frame that was being thrown away at work to build up the back (Gormo, you'd be proud). I then knocked up an overhead frame out of aluminium strips inspired by Industry Lane to support some LED strips and get some decent light.

One down and one to go of the modules. Then into the fun stuff.

(Mind the bodgy corner joint, I'll run a curved piece in there shortly to hide it )
