    Great prize Reidy.
I'm guessing that your host at Mortdale (AMRA Clubroom) may have been Dennis ?? :scratchchin:

Something that is unique to their layout (Stoney Creek) is that it can be run with both DC and DCC at the very same time. One operator can be controlling his/her train from a dcc handset (or tablet/Iphone downstairs) whilst another member is driving his train on dc !!
Dennis did explain to me how it works, but he lost me. Far to much technical jargon !! :faint:

    Cheers, Gary.

I'm shocking with names Gary. I think it might have been Bruce?

I saw some of the wiring under the baseboards. From what I saw the National Broadband Network could use a few of these fellas showing them how to get the job done 👍

    Hi team

I thought I would drop a quick line to give a short update. Unfortunately, work has me away in Queensland for a couple of weeks and I will be busy until the end of next month. That's not to say that I haven't been planning and researching!

    Recent progress:

    - sale of all insulfrog frog points and rolling stock that didn't fit my layout. Building up some funds to start purchasing the new stuff. Best price for the code 75 medium radius turnouts is about $26 from dccconcepts. Please sing out anyone who has seen a better price! (Missus shaking her head atm; I shoot, fish, 4wd, camp, kayak and play cricket, she honestly thinks I'm the most expensive hobbyist on the planet)
    - I've decided to sell my two older Powerline 48s and Lima 44 and replace with another Trainorama 48 in reverse or Indian red livery. I think two would work well in the space I have with one working the yard and stabled overnight and the other on its way to or from Cootamundra. I'll keep the roster small to not clutter the small space I have. The newer models are Dcc ready and although I have the patience and a small amount of skill with a soldering iron, the new models are just so damn nice! I'm also keeping an eye out for a z19 steamer and will probably order a C30T from austrains that's due next year.
    - I'm going with an NCE power cab system. I want sound and realistic running. Enough said I suppose.

My plan is to purchase the track and powercab system to test the layouts operation first. When I'm happy I'll dissemble and lay down the foam boards and go from there.

My biggest concern is that the L shape will make the layout awkward. In the testing phase I'll work out how long the trains will be and reconsider my options for the storage/fiddle yard. I love the planks on here and would consider moving back to single plank if it means making it more enjoyable. We'll see how it goes!

Working away from home is always a good time for the planning regime. You should try some of the free track planning software to play about with different plans in order to assess playability before committing yourself to any particular layout style....... It just might help you decide.

    Cheers

    Hi Reidy

Have a look at Virtual box, it would allow you to run a Windoze virtual machine on your apple, giving you access to Anyrail.

On the track pricing scheme of things, I purchase all my points, slips, cross overs from Hattons in the UK. I purchase all my flexi track here in Oz.

    http://www.hattons.co.uk/stocklist/1000588/1000688/OO_Gauge_1_76_Scale_Track_Code_75_Finescale/prodlistbyscaleandtype.aspx

So, as an example of the cost saving :

Medium Left Point Code 75 Electrofrog (SL-E196) from Hattons :£12.00 or $19.25 AUD,

Minus 18-20% VAT (a deduction £2.15), total cost minus VAT for point : £9.85 or $15.75 AUD

Postage for a dozen points would set you back about £5.00 or $8.10 AUD !

Chi Ching, a BIG saving !:D

On the other hand, the flexi track would cost more to post out due to the unusual size of the carton, hence why I purchase the flexi here in Oz. Then again, the savings made on the points would more than be adequate to cover cost of posting flexi track over !

    Cheers, Gary.

The 48 class are at a bargin price at the moment so I also picked up a few additions to the fleet.

The 49 is a score Reidy, they are getting hard to find a good orignal one, yours looks like as new congrats.

    Hi Chis,

Yes I did get lucky indeed. The 48s and the 49 will probably round out my locomotive power. Although there is a pair of 47s and another 49 that might make there way here this week...

No progress on the layout. I will order the track shortly.

I find the private operator models fascinating. Love the red and white. I did see this on eBay. You don't want a 41 class do you? I can't get a bid even below $200:facepalm:

Well I caved (again). They were such a good price that I couldn't say no.

I bought them thinking I would probably on sell them once I decided which ones I like the most...but they're all so nice I think it would be hard to let any of them go.

4701 has a had a nice light weathering job done to it which impressed me.

Unfortunately 4711 has the dreaded Trainorama clicking gear problem. Will have to research a fix for that.

I think I've pretty well got all of the NSW branchline diesels. I don't really care that the 47s never ran to Tumut, I have a narrative building around the paper mill in town going through a huge growth period and NSW railways having to bring the 47s up from the Hunter Valley to run the branchline timber trains down to Cootamundra. I think the loco roster is probably a shade big for sleepy Tumut, but hey, who really cares

Interesting green and gold NSWGR experimental livery. Was never widely used but I think it looks pretty cool in contrast to the other locos.

I've definitely gone over-the-top... here's them all, including the old Powerline units and the Lima 44.

I think I'll use the Powerline units to practice my weathering skills and see if I can detail them up a bit closer to the prototype. The Lima 44 needs some serious time in the workshop.

SWMBO is away for work. Time for some Anyrail. Behold iteration 4. I was concerned with the inefficient use of space so I simplified the Tumut yard area. I also want to model the timber mill to add some operating interest. Having the spur off to the mill facing back into the yard forces some shunting and switching - not prototypical but fun! I need some help with the entrance into the yard - not 100% happy with this plan but it is starting to feel like it might turn into something good. I tried a double slip out to the engine shed but the angles didn't really work too well. What do you guys think?

Really liking the Green 49 hopfully a O scale one will make its way to Moonan Flats the 47 are a quirky little loco but I do like them the candy one you have is nicely weathered. Nice pick up.

Re Too many Locos wash your mouth out :giggle::giggle::giggle:
You have a bit of catching up to do.

Remember the saying He who dies with the most trains wins:thumbs:

well it's usualy the widow wins when she's sold them all, that how it works isn't it
I've had to do the train room clearing a few times for over the years for people.:faint:

Re the track plan the only mod that may be nessasry only to gain a longer runaround is to place the point for the center loop coming off the goods lead rather than after the engine shed point on the platform lead will give a good bit more lenght in the runaround/Loop.

I can't see any issue with the timber mill siding coming off the yard many country yards had Spurs off them into line side industry's some crossing streets etc

Hopfully an example below of a milk siding

Haha yeah what's wrong with me?

Good point about the runaround. I'll play with that tomorrow. Also want to look at the scenic transition from the mill to the line running off to the sector plate. I'm thinking a hilly area with a cutting and a slight descent into the the yard with the mill the lowest part of the layout.

Some good progress has been made!
I have more or less finalised (famous last words) the plan (thanks for your input, Chris). Hatton's have shipped the appropriate Peco Code 75 points (thanks for the heads up, Gary) and it's starting to get exciting! I've got a rare afternoon off so I might pop down to the Model Railway Craftsman to check out the NCE Powercab and see what they have to say.

The plan is attached. There's still work to be done on the implementation of the fiddle yard. The paper mill siding could allow another entry point to the layout if I went with Gormo's fiddle yard cassettes. Perhaps a small branch from Tumut for a rail motor to pick up the school kids from South Tumut? Or an off scene turntable? I would dearly love to not have to touch the locos but i think space may be the limiting factor. The solution will be a compromise but I'm confident i'll come up with something.
