    Dear Paul_I, Toto, and others,

1 / re #275, is there a reason for the nut being on top of the bolt that holds the tender bar coupling ?

I would have thought having the bolt head on top, which could then be soldered in place, and filed down if need be, would resolve the long bolt issue, which could also allow for two nuts to lock, in lieu of thickened nail polish as a nut locker coating, if there is a concern about the nut dropping off in service,

2 / I liked the illustration, and description of, cleaning up seized axles, very good, and also very helpful,

    Regards, Echidna

    Hi Echina,

The nut's position is as per kit instructions - that or Toto and I have read them wrong - a fair possibility but not this time . I assume if it were the other way round as you say you could loose the nut anywhere, whereas if the screw drops off the loco and tender will part company straight away, and making it hopefully easier to find.
You cant tighten up the screw fully as this will lockup the draw bar. I could find a piece of tube to fit over the screw and enlarge the drawbar hole.

    Hi Yorkie

I'll give the standard Vallejo primer a go, due to the cold weather it's too cold to paint the model outside, and the fumes too bad for spraying inside.

    Cheers
    Paul

There is also the flip side that if the screw goes in from the top, should the nut work loose, the tender wont be left drawing to a halt on the track back in the distance. In other words, shou,d the nut work loose, the screw still offers a mechanical connection. True, you may lose the nut along the line somewhere but ........ :scratchchin: which do you want .... potentially losing the nut or the embarrassment of a run away tender in the middle of an operating session at an exhibition. :avatar: a tough one.

It's a nominal 17c in the cave, turned on a couple of PC's, so hopefully by the time the dog walking has completed it'll be up around 20c, and painting can begin. 17c is probably ok, but I'd like it a little warmer.

Tender body is in the ultrasonic cleaner for its first wash. Then a scrub with cream cleaner with a little help from my minion

Every cave needs a minion - mine was a Tesco discount at £2.50 (inc batteries) a few years ago.

A good wash in warm water (not too hot as I dont know what sort of solder Toto used on the white metal), then another ultrasonic bath, a wash in IPA then should be ready for primer.

    Looks like a busy day

    and primed

Tender body spa session completed and ready for primer

And with my best Michael Jackson impersonation spraying begins

    and it all went grey

    Finally the chassis

Time to clean the brush and allow the paint to harden (a bit) before the black paint is started. Then a coffee

Excellent Dundee... would you be able to report on how the Vallejo primer holds up please? I use the Model Colour on dioramas and it is spot on for grip but that is on plastics I'd add.

BTW those two open round shaped bowls are a great mod on the tender ... are they for carrying coal and water respectively ? :avatar:

I wonder if Dundee is adding a pointy speed stripe along the side to make his 4F go faster :avatar:

    Nice job.

I gave a couple of wagons that have grown for on them joining the list. Keep the air brush primed. :avatar:

Looks good. The photos dont do it justice as the covering doesn't look solid. I of course have the benefit of having seen the finish on Skype. A nice solid finish. Probably down to the lighting as you say and the flash from the camera.

Just the loco for me to complete which will be a hospital job during the Q1 build. ..... excellent work Dundee.

Re Vallejo Paint on brass, the longer you leave it the harder it gets.

I foolishly sprayed one end of a part built horsebox to see how well it covered etc. I left it for a few months having forgotten it and then I had the very devil of a job getting it off again...

Another coat of black applied to the tender body. It looked ok, but appeared patchy in photo's.

Once dry I will hand paint white primer onto the buffer beam, then Tamiya Flat Red (XF-7).

It will then be ready for our flounder to get back.

Yes, a terrific job done. Just needs me to progress the loco now which is also lying in a bit of a sorry state due to being out in the shed for so long.

Hopefully I can maybe try giving the loco body and chassis a try myself. I did have a play around with the airbrush myself but could not get the setting correct to offer any kind of consistency. I think a tutorial from Paul may get me on course when time permits.

The loco and chassis are well on but still a reasonable bit to go to get it over the line. I will be treating this as a hospital job for some relief from my Q1 build 2hich will be on the bench shortly. ...... hopefully we will have a runner.:avatar: first ever completed loco. Maybe not the prettiest but as long as it runs. I have another of these kits so lessons have been learned and a second attempt should reap improvements.

    Cheers for now

    Excellent finish Paul.

Looks the part. I'm happy with the build, being my first tender. I just hope the loco does not let it down. I'd be happy running that on a layout. I'll get the loco back on the bench again ..... ready for mating. ..... the loco and the tender that is. :avatar:

Gives you a little spur onwards to see it looking decent.

    Cheers for now
