Now that was brave deleting to 5.5mm, cause you just know Murphy is waiting and the next chassis is just bound to require a 5.5mm chassis Got the bits, floor, seperator and roof fit perfectly - just need to decide on which brake gear to fit. Visitors today and tomorrow, so hopefully will be able to post up progress later. Paul
Paul, Given we have just got back from a weekend with our soon to be outlaws your probably going to be the first person to actually complete a Mossy designed wagon. I've got a new pair of D1- D2 wagons to play with but they wont be started till tomorrow at the earliest and when assembled they are off to Rob P to be printed. Mossy
Not much progress over the weekend - forgot it was fathers day yesterday, so was hijacked by the kiddywinkles Some of the small items Mossy sent me are shown below The level of detail is impressive, and the leaf springs ........ Actually, I'd be tempted to add spigots to the center of each mount and see if the company Rob used couuld make either brass or whitemetal castings. What I have found interesting is the differences in approach the pair of us have taken. Look at the axle boxes in the above picture, on the rear of the box Mossy has the axle center showing but also within recessed rectangle, whereas I used a round recess. Now my W irons have the boss for the pin point bearings, which is larger than Mossy's rectangular recess But a wee bit of work with a fle and a scalple on the boss we get We must be doing something right as the box aligned with my W iron, and the rectangular recess allows for verticle adjustment. I also like Mossy's notches for the vehicle center, and axle centers with the appropriate alignment spigot on the V hangers and W irons. As said earlier all these parts are amazing. Paul
Paul, Thanks for the compliments - it's nice I have done something right. I'll be happy if you say the brake gear fits - it's the one thing I have really struggled with. If you want the stl for the spring your welcome to it, I also have the same for a 4'6" spring and another with shackle plates (again 4' 6") which fit my 2 brake vans (still to be printed and finalised. As for the notches for the axle boxes and brake V - originally were both 1mm sq, but I soon figured out I needed some tolerance so these days the solebar cut out is 1mm sq, the notch on the boxes etc are .8mm sq. Mossy
Feeling a bit embarassed that Paul might complete one of my models before me I set to with the D10 double bolster wagon not in competition but just to prove I could put one together as well. First up I have been unhappy at not being able to use my axle spacing gauge because of the bearing which fit the compensation unit - they stick to far through the unit they block the spacing gauge (see before below) so took a razor saw to it followed by a small file - now I can use the gauge. Any way on to the build, first up body, separate end, floor, axle boxes and brake v's A quick application of super glue and two pre assembled compensation units give you a half assembled wagon (buffers and coupling hooks are just a push fit), the main bolsters as just propped up. Next up the brake gear but that's for later. Mossy
Nice one Ah the brake gear - on mine it's close but tight, but I have a suggestion for the future rather than just filing. If you remove the pivot block from each assembly, and print it as a seperate item, you can thead the pivot block onto the crossshaft between the V hangers. Then align and glue the brake assembly to each wheel, finally gluing the brake rods and pulley together, allowing for any variation in the axle position. Now a question, did the NER wash down the inside with Lime wash to disenfect the wagon (as per HR practice), and would the interior be Grey, plain wood or white / lime washed. I may be getting a bit ahead of myself but I feel as if a gauntlet has been thrown down Also made a purchase, - yesterday spotted Anycubic were having a Fathers day sale, the Mono X 4K was going for £324, that's less than half what I paid for my first one. I've having a few issues lately with mine - spurious bits on the FEP, and straight line build ups on the model or FEP always in the same place. I believe my screen may be on its way out, can't realy complain as all 3 of my printer screens are well past thier sell by dates. I was tempted by the M3 Ultra, but not @ £970. While my original Photons are still working I'll not replace thier screens, as Chitubox do a 6" mono screen conversion, only downside is the new controller card is the one used for the Elegoo Mono printer, so the file extension would be different. A good reason to always save the project and not just the print file, as with the project file you can create the print file for any supported printer. Keep up the good work Paul
Hi Paul, I've been thinking along similar lines with the pivot block but for now would you suggest backing off by say 1mm each side or just .5mm? Yes lime washed. Usual NER colours which are appropriate for an early wagon is all black below the solebar, grey above, except the buffer housings and coupling securing plate which are black, interior white including under side of the roof. Roof white canvas, Rob recommends lens tissues. No gauntlet required as the D10 brake gear doesn't fit and I seem to have lost that part of the project so it's having to be redrawn, should be sorted later on, but tomorrow is a walking day so no time to play or print it. I always screw models up with my shocking paint jobs, so I have done a deal with Rob, I supply him with my assembled model and a full set of parts, he builds a second one for himself and then paints them both, so I am bound to lose! Oh and finally yes I keep all the projects and try to keep detailed notes on the build sequence so it can be recreated or modified if/when required. Mossy
Oh ^&*% Last night I was deemed surplus to requirements for todays walk - its a ladies day and I certainly not walking with 3 females who will jabber on endlessly for 4-5 hours so decided to crack on with the double bolster. I got this far: Then as I went to fit the brake levers a lightbulb switched on, spot the deliberate error - yep the brakes face right they should face left. &^%$£$%. After a ten minute temper tantrum I clamed down and had a second look oh £$%^%$, if you know about NER wagons the second problem is obvious if not you wouldn't spot it. I have fitted type 1A axle boxes, this wagon started life with type 2's and moved on from there. This is officially a write-off. I'm not a happy bunny fortunately I have a spare set of components so will be starting again once my blood pressure returns to normal. Mossy
Not that I would have known ...... And there he was trying to sneak in an extra day on me better get my act together then Paul
Now before I commit to glue is this correct I need to trim the brake shoes a little as the are rubbing otherwise nothing has been changed, apart from reducing the height of the V hangers. Paul
Still with commitment issues Now the placement of the brake lever had me going for a while - just as well the drawing calmed me down Not used to having the support before the axle box If this is correct then I will shave the shoe on one of the brake shoes and glue the suckers in place Paul
Paul Yes the short brake levers should be before the axle boxes. If you prefer the long version I have those as well. I see you've gone for combined brakes and left and right brake levers. I'm going for the opposite side opposite wheel configuration with short levers. Commitment???? I see a sneaky bit of a paint job was done during this commitment, isn't that cheating? You would think this is some kind of race! Mossy
Paul Are you sure you have the brake levers on the right sides? It's not very clear on the photo. Mossy
Sorry to tell you, but as you have them, pressing the lever will take the brakes off rather than applying them.
Rob, That explains what I was looking at - the levers are on the right side of the wagon but should be on the opposite end of the wagon. Mossy
Working to this drawing I'll try spining the brake gear the other way round, but will need to see if the brake pad detail is on both sides. Cheers Rob Paul
The brake gear detail should be on both sides but I think you just have the levers on the wrong end of each side, try swooping them over. Mossy
Swapped sides - still not glued in place but ....... Howszat ..... I think I don't think my axles are square as the brakes are now tight on both sides Paul
Paul, That looks right, but don't go filing the brakes, I have created a new set giving more clearance between the brakes and wheels, I will print and post you a set later today. Would you check both the combined brakes and the opposite side opposite wheel brakes please. Mossy
