Yes all good Andy, purchased them originally as twin motor sets but I was hoping to use two on another project.

I bought my Hymek conversion with the two motor option, not sure about the wheels tho... I'll swap them for Slaters when the time comes as the live chassis route isn't my cup of tea.

Well the chassis spacing issue looks like it’s resolved. Re soldered the mounting points 10mm further apart (5mm each side) and a quick placing of the bogies and fuel tank shows that it looks like it will now fit together correctly. I’ll do a full assembly later and a track test. Really need to get stuck into the bodies now as there’s a lot of scratch building in the cab areas to complete, plus lots of sanding to do to make then look half reasonable for painting........

A bit of sanding and then a blow over with a rattle can primer shows up the areas that still need some attention.

the old roof fixing holes are proving a tad difficult to hide, more fine filler and wet and dry paper. I will also start to sort out some basic cab detailing and a cab floor for the seats and a driver to be mounted on.

    this weeks update.......Cab interiors....

A floor and mounting point for the seats will need to be made from plastic-card, plus a representation of a dash board.

Test fit with George the driver

    rear section of flooring next

so I ended up with three templates which were then used to make up 4 sets of three

next some dash detailing for George to fiddle about with !! ...

quick flash over with some paperbark paint colour

    add a spot of colour...

    test fit in cab

next up lights....2 x red marker lights at each end.....now thinking about the assembly / painting of this model...getting to the lights after the floor goes in is going to be extremely tight, so I’ve opted to install the lights and I will mask off the ends of the LED’s when painting.

now I can spray the cab interiors again I’ve used paperbark as the off white colour

George and his twin brother Georgina ! Get some colour added....

If it's a tight fit to get LED's in Kim, try using optic fibres. Just drill an LED size hole into the end of a short bit of some 6mm clear plastic rod, optic fibre size holes in t'other end, butt them together (a push fit is best as optic fibre doesn't like most glues!), run fibres to where needed. I've used dual Red/White LED's on occasion so lights can be either front or rear as needed.

Time to add some paint. Paul (Hodgy) very kindly gave me a can of BR blue paint from Phoenix to paint these two models. I was originally going to paint them green but as I now own a Heljan version in that livery, I have decided to go blue which will also mean I can pose them on Pauls TMD layout when finished. So bodies are painted blue, cabs have to be repainted. Off white inside, yellow windows, blue roof.
First paint bodies then cab interiors, mask cabs and add the yellow.

    .

once this is all dry I will re mask the cabs inside and the yellow windows to paint the cab roof. Plus the bodies will be masked up so that the yellow front ends and a small line around the cab can be painted in yellow.

Hymeks look really well in corporate blue, these two are coming along nicely Kim... you've certainly cracked this project and I'm looking forward to seeing them posing on Paul's diesel depot.:tophat::tophat::tophat::thumbup:

The good news and .........the bad news.......

before spraying the cab rooves I decided to check out the glazing sets. These just needed cutting out and then pushed in and glued up.

so time to finish the paint off....cabs first

quite pleased with the end result apart from some blue over spray (can’t believe how it finds It’s away through the masking tape). I’ll sort that issue out when they are fitted to the bodies....

    ...

    ...

now the bad news. Removed the “low tack” masking tape after spraying the front ends yellow and I’m left with this..

    :faint::facepalm::mad:

‘did I mention I was modelling these as scrappers :avatar:

well that’s sorted out Saturdays modelling time............

    Bugger....
Did you key the primer with some fine wet and dry first before spraying?

Hi Pete, yes both were rubbed down, I think the issue was with the low tack tape as the only areas affected are where the tape was.
I’ve rubbed them back again now and then cleaned them and applied a light coat of blue. I’ll apply a second coat today and post up the results.

Did you remove the tape as soon as the paint had flashed off but before it had dried? If the paint had dried fully on top of the tape, it might have pulled the paint rather than separating from it.
Fingers crossed for the second attempt!

    Cheers, Pete.

Pete, I think your right, I did leave it on. Didn’t manage to do it today, so tomorrow I will try again and remove the tape sooner

Oh tiddly pop what a shame Kimbo it has done that if its any consolation that has happened to me as well in the past. What sort of low tack tape did you use ?

I've go a roll of two of that yellow Tamiya lining tape and wondered how that might stand up in the paint finishing process.

On a different but similar note regards tack tape I once priced low on a bungalow rental repaint for an estate agents who specified using that nasty one coat gloss, I taped up all the skirting boards using low tack for speed and coated the woodwork, the following day with paint work dried I started pulling the tack tape only to discover it was bringing the new paint and a couple of old layers beneath along with it. It seems the dried paint on the tape was tearing the finish.

Another benefit of removing masking tape while the paint is still fairly soft, not wet, is that you can get a sharper edge to the paint.

    Cheers, Pete.

Paul, I used tamiya tape on the edge but made the mistake of using 3M low tack on the body, mistake, should have only used it stuck to the tamiya tape. Plus as Pete suggested, I left it on to long.
All a bit new to me this process of two / three different colours, much prefer painting my kettles different shades of black, all over !!

Well two coats of blue later, not perfect, but once I’ve touched in the errors and applied some weathering, I’m hoping they will be reasonable, at the end of the day they are what they are, a TRIANG Big / Nova model.

They look pretty lush to me Kim and again thanks for the Tamiya tape masking tip:tophat:, I haven't used mine yet but now I see how it is used and how a barrier cover is applied behind the areas to be painted stopping flash over. Thanks also Pete for the tip about removing tape whilst paint is still soft. :tophat:.

I think whilst the green livery for Hymeks is nice it involves a lot of work and the Rail Blue in many ways is just as appealing now that it s classed as an historic livery.
