Oh definitely so Kim, the main thing is they look good and will bring pleasure by seeing them perform on layouts. I know from my attempt at rebuilding my BBT Hymek (which is still gathering dust on the workshop window cill) that it takes a huge input to correct the cab profile what with cutting, shaping, sanding and fillering... I nearly gave up the will to live and still cannot draw myself to finish the job.

Well worth the agony. These are major undertakings not just another build. Very impressive.

    No challenge too big Kimbo.

    Well done Sir

the thing which can really complicate the Hymek Big Blue Train conversion is funnily enough the plastc, the original Triang plastic was quite malleable and the slightest nick with a scalpal was akin to carving butter and takes a lot of stoppering and smoothing with Green putty to bring the surface back. On the later Russian Novo version the plastic used there is very brittle so the problem when cutting becomes how to avoid the plastic from shearing.

Kimbo has done an amazing job. :tophat::tophat::tophat::tophat:

The Triang one was a nightmare to deal with, and I had to repair several sections.....but the Novo version was even worse, hence the reason I’ve not moved the fan position, as the rooves kept splitting every time I looked at them.
    Hindsight is a wonderful thing

You have my sympathies Kim because I now know why some of the garden railway lads steered towards detailing the Heljan bodyshells instead, I sourced two Triang versions as I'd heard about the Novo brittle plastic and even cutting out all the guts leaving just sides and ends was a bit hairy. thing is you pulled it off and they look the part despite all the obstacles and setbacks encountered.:tophat::tophat::tophat::tophat:

My honest advice for anyone thinking of modifying the Triang Mark 2 coaches is don't ... the effort isn't worth the cost or the time involved.

I’ll second that Paul....there’s is the argument that building or modifying a model adds to the enjoyment and that you can’t put a price on it, but there’s also a point where you have to ask yourself, is the final result worth all the effort, if it’s an accurate spot on conversion then yes...but if there’s a lot of compromises then ..well, the modeller must decide...

So 7017 has had the buffer beam detailing and buffers added, fuel tank screwed back on and then the bogies added this time I’ve used the nylon screw supplied in the kit, which hopefully will help stop some of the running noise, from the chain drive axles, been transferred into the body, we’ll see how it sounds when track tested.
I’m wiring it up onto a spare ESU XL decoder I have, I’ve not got a sound file for it so it will be just DCC for now.
So here she is ready for testing tomorrow as my test rig has decided to stop working

ESU XL decoder slotted into a cut out section I made in the original battery house section of the body.

Plenty of room above the decoder

roof on and windscreen’s cleaned of finger prints.

    track level shot

so first one completed apart from a spot of paint and weathering, on to 7016 now, then hopefully I can track test them both tomorrow.....fingers crossed.
