Ok, Dundee over but still Elgin to go.I am being brain washed by Paul that the concept f Luib Bridge being good enough and in a state of readiness for Dundee next year is not a fantasy. Whether or not that is a sane idea, I am going to set myself a target of say the end of January to make some heavy progress with electrics, ballasting / ground cover, platforms and at least a decent start at the buildings / structures and re-evaluate the state of play when that time comes. If what is achieved is decent, I will commit to it, if not I can always amble along with the layout for personal pleasure / home viewing only. Finishing the electrics and cleaning the track work / soldering etc will be my first task before commencing on the ballasting and ground cover on the main scenic board. I will be looking for ideas to lift the flatness from the layout so my thinking cap is now on. First physical progress and update will be Saturday aso keep an eye open. Cheers Toto
Can you post up a link to the original thread on Luib Bridge ?? I do recall you had some ideas on what you wanted on the layout... Cheers, Gary.
G`day Toto, I reckon a lot of railways are set down into the landscape or it just seems that way.??? In other words just build up landscape / walls or whatever beside your rail lines and it will lose that flat feel. That`s what I`m doing with GCJ because it`s all flat. Eventually I want it to look like it`s set down lower into the scenery by raising the landscape on the sides of the track. http://www.clickGormo
Question, how do you get static grass to come up through ballast and ground cover ? ill be using a mixture of black and brown ballast and fine grounds as the majority of ground cover but id like some greenery coming through in bits to break up the sheet of brown / black. cheers Toto
Toto wrote: Toto it's a little hard to get the static grass to Grow up between the Ballast but you can get it to look like it has grown down by adding more 50:50 glue mix to the ballast and then apply the static grass put some tape on the rails or make sure no glue gets on then then once dry vacuumed any excess off this can be recycled if you use a filter sock over the end of the vac tube. If you only want the grass in small spots use a bit of paper with cut outs in it as a mask then you only get the grass in those spots as it is shaken out of the applicator lif the mask off carefully and return the excess fibers to the container. Next option is to make clumps of static grass by rubbing it between your hands this aligns the fibres you end up with a rolled length, place a drip of glue in the location for the clump of grass then dip the end in the glue and the fibers stay and you get a clump of grass that you can then tease to the desired shape trim etc. it may take a few test goes to find what suits the style of grass you are desiring. Some times if you also spray it with a fine mist of isopropanol / water mix it will wick the glue through the fibers and then when dry will be very well stuck It's all about finding what works for you with the Aplication of static grass, a bit of trial and error may be, but once you hit on what works for you the finished results with static grass are very pleasing
I would possibly recommend 12mm static grass on Luib Bridge. Anything smaller may look out of place. Remember, you can trim the grass clumps down once it has cured. So, two ways you can go about this. This first method is possibly the easiest. 1. Apply small dollops of PVA between the sleepers. Pinch the static grass between your fingers and push into the PVA. Leave the grass standing for about 5 minutes, then using a cocktail stick, tease out the fibres to make a clump. Once this is completed throughout the layout, you can then ballast the usual way, spread ballast then apply the 50/50 PVA/water solution. Add a drop of washing up detergent to the PVA/water as it helps break the surface tension. 2. Ballast all your track and allow to dry, then using an applicator, apply the static grass through holed paper as Chris suggested. Sorry, no pics of this method ! There really is no 'right' way of doing this. I would suggest having a play with a piece of track off cut on a piece of wood. Oh, the ballast used in the above pics is Woodland Scenics (Medium Grey Blend) HO scale ballast ! This looks to be almost the right size for an O gauge used rail yard ! Cheers, Gary.
Cheers, looks reasonably simples. I may try and blend some bigger chunks of coal in here and there. The ballast still looks a bit fine. toto
Luib bridge will see the light of day tomorrow. I went to B & Q earlier tonight and picked up 3 trestles to use as layout support stands. Would have ideally taken 4 but only 3 in stock. Height adjustable so ideal. I need to put them together now but looks like it will be coming indoors. Mmmmmm ...... wonder what swmbo will have to say about that. Electrics tomorrow. May even be able to pose me 4 MT on some track. ...... Little things eh...... Cheers Toto
Here we are, One of three built. I need to tighten it all up a bit but first impressions are ...... pretty solid. Two more to build and then we'll give them a test drive tomorrow. cheers for now. Toto
So you had to get the expensive ones then They look good, how stable are they at the max height ? Paul
Hi Paul, Not tried it at full height yet but unlikely to use it at that height anyway. The height as shown is about ideal and very steady at that. I'll give them a whirl tomorrow and report back with some photo's. cheers Toto
Well, limbering up trying to get myself in the right place for attacking todays shed duties. the rain has started lightly so its either the shed or bringing the layout into the house. I think I'll fit what I can in the shed and keep swmbo happy for a while then when it gets to the point where I need to join the baseboards together to look at powering up .......... Some severe buttering up will be required. Ahhhhhh ..... the old silver tongue devil will work his magic. My failure rate in this area is usually favorable. wish me luck. a little tidying away of the remnants of the Dundee show then its best foot forward. Some photo's to follow. cheers toto
Just offered to look at paint charts for the kitchen. I did promise it would be done before xmas so I have revived that old chestnut. i predict that Luib Bridge shall have its warm environment after all.
Better make sure the paint you choose will be good enough to paint the valance on Luib Bridge...! Cheers, Gary.
Toto wrote: You could always suggest BR standard Green that would look OK on a Valance for Luib Bridge maybe not so in the kitchen but some full size BR logos will liven it up.
