    Hi Gary,

These images are older versions. I shall get the layout thread up to date when I get out to the shed tomorrow.

I do have a few images with the walls etc in place. I'll post a couple up. The purpose of these photos was really to show the framework around the edges.

In fact, I'll maybe post up another couple tonight.

    cheers

    Hi Again,

a couple more images showing the track side walls that have been built since the previous photos. Again, a more updated selection of photo's will be posted tomorrow and going forward they will all be based on live / current progress.

Brick paper has since been added to these walls below.

Below to the right hand side is where the warehouse / loading platform will eventually go.

another shot showing the two sidings at the warehouse end of the layout.

And below the opposite end with the shunters siding and the main line which will disappear of the end into the traverser / fiddle yard.

apologies for the rather limited photos but that will be resolved soon.

    cheers for now

    Good afternoon.

An industrious morning has been spent in the shed having a good old tidy up. Mission three quarters accomplished. Just a few odds and ends to sort out but that can wait now. I have cleared a good working space.

Just finishing off a coffee and then going back to attack the Highbridge sub frame extension. Getting back in the zone thankfully.

There should be a few more photos later of where Highbridge currently is and also the progress that I make this afternoon. I'll post them up later.

Hope you all have a productive day in one way or another.

    Cheers

    Toto

    And here we are,

as I mentioned in my previous post, the photo's shown were not quite up to date so before showing what I've done this morning, I'll let you see the subtle changes made prior to that. It is mostly the application of brick paper / card which there is still a bit to go with yet.

    however..... here we are.

From the photo below, you can see that I have started to apply brick paper to the rear embankment walls and the low level track side walls.

here is another. You will be able to see some of the joins but that does not matter as there will be supporting piers to cover them.

Below to the top of the picture, you will see a squarish box made of ply. that is one of the bridge abutments that needs taken back by about 5mm. that should be happening later this afternoon.

No you can see the second abutment that also needs taken back by about the same ..... 5mm.

The two slimmer abutments to the top right of the shot below are fine and will be covered in brick card. There will also be a concrete bridge bearing installed on all four abutments.

Now........ kicking off with this mornings task....... extending the layout sub frame. You can see from the photo below, I am just adding a further length of 2 x 1 around the exisiting frame.

and another, showing the side going in.

and another, of the completed framework.

and a sheet of 6mm plywood to protect the underside.

and another, of the top side.

and one ast one for now from the other side.

Well, I hope the above has been of some interest. Things will be moving at a pace now. The bug is back. Next up is the alteration of the abutments and completion of the brick card. I shall also be fitting out the cobalts and getting some power to the steels.

When I remove the ply panel to fit the cobalts, I may stick another supporting timber batton across the layout about half way along just to provide a little bit more cross bracing.

Once the above is done, I will be looking at ballasting and starting the embankment etc. So....... stay tuned because there will be some great progress being made.

as usual, any questions, queries etc ........ feel free.

    cheers for now

    Hi Chris,

Thank you for popping in. I will be back on the case later this afternoon. I will progress the brick card and the abutments.

It is intended to be quite industrial with signs of the old steam days still lingering on. Its meant to be a test layout for me as I have not really done any modelling before. The idea being that I maybe hone my skills ( or lack of ) on here before letting myself loose on the R & GLR.

or so it goes in theory ........ :avatar:

I'm looking forward to cracking on with it.

    cheers

    Hi Tom

You may need to put some sound deadning inside the box (foam / poystyrene etc) as your making a nice sound box.

    Mojo on there dear chap.....

    Hi Paul,

I could always drill a series of 20mm holes in the ply just to let a bit of the sound out so to speak.

I could also glue a sheet of polystyrene to the inside of the ply sheet to dull it down a bit.

We'll see how bad it is first.

    Cheers

    Toto

    G`day Toto & Mojo,
One thing I must say Toto is that you are doing some nice wood work there on your layout........nice touches here and there......they will stand you in good stead I reckon.
The detail itself with brick paper / card is giving us a glimpse of what is to come and it looks interesting. I am a sucker for bridges and the illusion they give. They break the layout into separate viewing areas......scenic breaks. When you are looking at one section your mind is curious to know what`s going on in the other section. What is beyond the bridge....just around that corner?????......it makes a layout more interesting when the viewer starts to use their imagination and they become drawn into the scene.
I read somewhere that you should have a scenic break like a bridge or building or whatever, every six feet or so on a big layout, because when you are viewing same layout, that`s roughly the area you focus on at any one time. Therefore, mentally we prefer to break it up into sections for analysis and if the sections are already determined for us I guess, mentally and visually we are more comfortable with that.
Carry on old chap.....:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: you`re on track to get a five thumbs up. Not often I hand them out....so you`re doing well to get a four.

    Thank you kind Sir,

I am honored indeed. You will see the bridges of course and at the warehouse end I intend to do a partially blocked off tunnel where the two sidings are and an open one to create the impression of a through line. It means trying to create ( as you very neatly put it ) the illusion of somewhere else to go.

I have a lot of pocket sized projects ahead of me now which should provide some interesting posts. I know where I am heading with the general build and the cobalts etc but still a bit wary of tackling the ballasting etc. ....... get it wrong and its a messy recovery job required.

I need to get the right mix in the right place to suggest certain types of spillages from coal, diesel and general grime and wear and tear. I might try sketching it out first when the time comes.

    cheers

    Nah!!! Toto,
You`ll find ballasting a piece of cake.
You need to study the real thing through pictures or a visit to the railway. When you`ve ballasted you need to get to work with the paint to dirty it up with oil stains, moss, rust, weeds, water etc. and that`s when it will come to life. A lot of those details can be added on top like layers......so really you will have a lot of control over what you`re doing.
When you are ballasting......just do a small section....maybe 6 inches at a time....get that right and then move onto the next section. But get the ballast down first and then work on the detail.

    Hi Gormo,

I'll try that. I was intending to start off with some mid brown coloured ballast as a base colour. I have plenty of that at hand. Still, I'll not get ahead of myself, first of all I'll need to get the rest of my brick paper finished and the abutments moved.

I'll give you a shout when I am ready to make a start with the ballast.

    cheers

    Toto

Another tip for ballasting is either do as Gormo suggests, or using a broad flat paintbrush, sweep the ballast in to all the track and then using the 50/50 PVA/water solution (with a drop of washing up liquid- detergent) apply with an eye dropper or similar device. But be patient, very patient... ;) Then don't touch it !

Oh, have you painted your track yet ? This is first and the ballasting is second. If you have any buffer stops to go in, place them first as well, then ballast. It can be a PITA to remove ballast to get the buffer stops in.

    Cheers, Gary.

Hi Tom, did you get your ballasting 'machine' yet? Makes life much easier!! I also used 'Ballast Bond' instead of a PVA mixture and was very pleased with the result on Weybourne.

    Cheers
