Having noticed the Southern coach amongst your recent pics Ian, when I did a bit of research on 60's-ish Southern overheads in shed area's etc, they were just basic tram type catenaries, voltage was only 650 or 750 DC same as the third rail voltage, hence development of the Class 73's with 3rd rail pickups and pantograph.

Cheers Keith ... whist my upper level will be used mainly to run/test all my locos including aTriang E2 and steeple cab, some proximity to prototype would be nice. I only have the one southern coach and an autocoach but will also run my railcar (eventually when I find time to build it) I'll have a look at what you suggest on googly.

Something Keith said inadvertently triggered a bit of a dilema ... as said previously I only have 2 coaches 1 Triang southern that'll need rewheeling .. is it worth the hasstle .. and an Airfix autocoach which is quite long. But I do have lots of wagons .. so .. if I turned the upper level into a goods siding I could use it as a storage area for the lower shunting plonk as well as pl ... running my mixed fleet ... waddya reckon :scratchchin:

Are you still going to use the catenary Ian ??

I sold a bunch of the old Triang/Hornby catenary a few years back, complete in original boxes, although slightly worn. I can tell you when those boxes left my hands, my wallet became quite heavy...! ;);)

    Cheers, Gary.

Yes Gary if I can find the width I forgot to allow for them when I built the upper level but I reckon I can do it. Triang catenery is expensive now I've had these around 7 years but its a good working system and as you know I can have a pantograph loco and a 2 rail loco running on the same track. The latest plan is to have the 2 upper sidings loaded with goods wagons that I'll be using on the lower shunting layout so as and when I need them I can have them brought out and uncoupled at the goods shed for lifting down. So I get to pla .... use both levels at the same time ...

    Hi Ian.
If your Triang coaches are the same as a few of my Triang Pullmans, then it's not a difficult job to rewheel them. I used some Gibson "Top Hat" pinpoint bearings and standard Hornby wheelsets. Just push the Triang axles out sideways to get rid of the wheels, superglue in the bearings, and when set, pop in the Hornby replacements, easy-peasy! The detail on Triang coaches is as good as Lima I reckon, and detail of a lot of Lima stuff is really the best thing about them......no wonder Hornby pretty much left the body mouldings alone when they bought out Lima, just remotoring loco's in the main. You can pick out the detail of door handles, hinges etc. with a gold (for brass) felt tip pen (guess your Chinese shop will have them, Home Bargains in the UK).

Hi Keith thanks for that I might try rewheeling as Ive got plenty of hornby wheels. The chinese shop is like home and bargains, B&Q, smiths ₩ilkinsons B&M and a Skegness gift shop on speed .

Hi Ian I remember this starting only a few weeks ago and it has progressed rapidly since then, impressive progress.

Reading back over the last few pages I do like the knitting needle idea, very innovative and just the sort of thing I like to see.

    Keep up the good work.
