Superb viaduct Steve it looks right at home ... er do I spy a couple of night fighters (Beaufighter and Defiant) being built for your airfield? A couple of my favourite kits. Ian vt
You certainly have been busy Steve. Nice job on the viaduct, it's looking great. Did you get the Vallejo paints for Christmas ?? You better watch that some of those courageous RAF pilots don't dip their noses into that quarry ! Cheers, Gary.
Thank you everyone for all the positive comments. I have said a few times already but I am so happy with the end result of the viaduct build. It's certainly worth all the time spent to get such a nice build. I spent this afternoon with the brains of the family , our 8 & a 1/2 year old son. We played around with the area around the viaduct working out what we are going to do there. He came up with some brilliant ideas and most of them are exactly what I was already thinking of so that means that the build becomes a group effort. We are going for a small beach area on the outer side of the viaduct and some nice white chalk cliffs which will be being mined for the chalk.
The baseboard has 3mm polystyrene laid on it so that if I need to redo the scenery I don't have to scrape anything off the baseboard. You can see some lines marking out where the water runs under the viaduct and into the sea. Attached files
These are the two photos I am using as my reference for the scene I am going to try and create. Attached files
I have managed to get a little more done on the layout. I got some plaster down into one section and today was able to source some more polystyrene sheet from the hardware store. It's this product. https://www.bunnings.com.au/knauf-insulation-1200-x-600-x-50mm-xps-multi-use-foam-board_p0811028 It cuts very nicely with the jigsaw and really leaves no mess whatsoever. Once I work out exactly what I'm doing in that section I'll put more plaster onto it. I mix the plaster with a paint stirrer and the drill, mixing burnt umber paint into it so it's a light brown colour. That way when I carve and sand it I don't get white patches at all. Also if it gets chipped it just looks like soil.
Steve this is the same stuff I used for the base boards on Lord Street Depot. Great to work with and very little weight. Not much mess when cutting it either and possible non if you use a hot wire cutter. Kim
Hi Kim, yeah I'm really impressed with it. It's much better than the white polystyrene I think. It should be perfect for sculpting scenery.
Some progress has been made with brown plaster spread out across the foam scenic base. It seems that plastering is very popular this time of the year with Steve Fay's Dawlish Seawall Layout coming on a treat too. Attached files
"plastered again Mr Power" !!! Really starting to take shape now Steve. Shouldnt take long to dry either in this weather !! Kim
