Hi Pete, I'm using the dremmel with a small routing bit.
The set I have also comes with some atttachments to make circular cutouts and this worked perfectly to scribe the straight lines along the top of the viaduct where the side wall above the track bed is and on the piers. These are really the only straight lines on the whole thing.
I'm trying not to get too caught up on it looking 100% perfect as I am sure that the stonemasons that built the real bridges weren't losing sleep over rough edges.
I do need to come up with a plan of how I can roughen up the face of the plaster as it is all perfectly smooth at the moment and I don't want that as the finish.
    I'm very open to suggestions.

Would a wire brush work Steve?

I thought of a wire brush myself, I'd make a test piece first to try it on. If it doesn't give you the desired effect I thought about making a tool with a piece of ply and knocking some panel pins through so just the tips poke through and gently drag it across the surface. Again make a test piece to practice on first.

    Pete.

I did give the plaster with a quick scrub of the wire brush yesterday. It looks ok but I'm thinking I may redo the scribing with a smaller router bit to get some smaller stones.
It just means that I need to reapply the plaster and let it dr again before I atttack it again.

Steve, looking at stone built viaducts, they all seem to have an archway of brick / stone work follow the arch, might be worth doing this scribing first before adding the horizontal stone work.:scratchchin:

I wasn't happy with the scribing I had done on the viaduct so I have replastered the sides and sanded the top walls to make it thinner and more even in width.
I've tried to get a rough finish with the plaster and will only give it a light sanding before painting and scribing.

A closer look at the stucco effect I have used to try and get an initial rough stone finish.

Well I spent an hour or so with Dremel in hand scribing away at the plaster today. I have finished the inside curve and made a start on the outer curve tonight. It's slow going but a bit of David Gilmour and Pink Floyd gets me through.
I'm really happy with the result so far and think that it will look spectacular once it's painted and sitting on the layout again.

This was after about twenty minutes of scribing.

Thanks Ian, it should be worth the effort.
If I was smart I would make a latex mould of the stonework so I could replicate it much quicker for other projects.

Thanks Chris, I agree. The work should pay off with a good end result. I remember looking at a similar project that someone did years ago and thinking to myself 'Why would you do that?'
I now know why. It's because there is an a lot of satisfaction in the whole task.

Well I've finished both sides of the viaduct. It was pretty quick work really.
Now the fun begins with the undersides of the arches. It's taking about an hour to to do each arch. So this is going to be a long process. But it is looking great. I have to do all of the underside because if I don't it will show up in photos and I will forever be kicking myself for not doing it properly.
