You're really motoring along with the photo plank now Pete. Starting to take shape.

Will or could this be part of Competition No.3 ?? :scratchchin: I can see your Scalescenes Competition No.1 build being included on here. ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

Its been an age since last posting on this topic, so I think an update is due.
I,ve not been completely idle, but not a great deal has been done as I have been doing some other work on my vintage engines and my caravan, but here is a few pics of what I have been doing.

First up, I have started to construct a low relief building to go on the right hand end of the plank inspired by White Swan yard on the Yarmouth junction railway, on the East coast, I will try and find some photos to explain, it was a single line that crossed a road and went between a pub, the White Swan and a very run down building into a coal yard. I am using Scalescenes stone paper blown up to 7mm and foam board for the carcass, the windows will be scratch built from plastic card.[IMG]

To do the scenics I wanted to use static grass for the ground cover, as I didn,t have an applicator or the funds to buy one, I built my own using directions of Youtube, cost, around £30, and enough left over to build another 10 or so.

    My first practice.

Very pleased with the result, no excuses now!

    Cheers, Pete.

There are a few more from the rear of the buildings but they don,t reflect what I intend to build.

    Cheers, Pete.

Great pics Pete. Now you wouldn't want to be carrying anything 'out of gauge' through there, very tight squeeze indeed !

    Cheers, Gary.

Gives you a good idea of the sheer size of these " little " shunters. imagine walking out in front of that. spare boxers required I'd think. :avatar:

Nice looking plank you're building, Pete. And isn't static grass heaps of fun?

    All the best,

    Mark.

Hi Mark thanks for that, yes I,ve been hankering after a static grass applicator for a while now but couldn,t afford one, I tried the tea strainer method but the results were very disappointing, then I saw the youtube video describing how to build your own and I thought, that looks easy so had a go, the end result works a treat so next job is to finish the plaster ground cover, slap some soil paint on and crack on with the grass! easy peasy!

    Cheers, Pete.

Extracted my digit and done some more on the plank!
First up I have done some plastering for the ground work using a gloopy mix of plaster/filler, black poster paint and pva spread liberally then smoothed with a wet paint brush, very messy!!!!

sorry for the very untidy shed :whatever:.

Done a lot on my first building, fitted my scratch made windows, they had me almost climbing the wall, so labour intensive, next time I will use Intentio laser cut windows, £5 for 4 including glazing, to protect my sanity.

The door and window lintels are thick paper and painted, the door is plasticard.

The roof tiles are paper cut into strips and glued on with pva, painted Tamiya Iron Grey.

Still need to do more detailing, guttering etc and weathering but its coming along.

    Cheers, Pete.

The building is coming along very nicely, Pete. Is the stonework printed? It looks very effective.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

    Hi Pete

To break up the flat surface, I run either the curved end of a thin steel rule along part of a joint, or and embossing pen

    http://www.therange.co.uk/xcut-4-in-1-embossing-pen/embossing/the-range/fcp-product/88280

These have 4 retractable heads, Pin, 1.0mm, 1.5mm and 2.0mm dia

Less is more, it only requires a little embossing of the motar lines and the whole surface suddenly appears to pop out - woth a try on a scrap piece.

    Impressive build.

    Paul

Very nice build Pete. The Scalescenes paper blows up very nicely without loosing any contrast or with any distortion to the print. Looking forward to the next building.

    Cheers, Gary.

Thanks Gary, I feel the blown up copy of the original stone paper is a little washed out but as I have already used it I will leave it as it is, however, on my printer there is the facility to alter the contrast so I will have a play and see what happens, though the brick paper I have done looks much better.
Hi Paul, I like the look of the embossed chimney stack , next time I,m in town I will nip into Range and see if they have an embossing pen and give it a whirl, thanks for the tip .

    Cheers, Pete.

Some more work done on the plank, doesn,t really deserve the name plank, its more of a diorama but plank is easier to type, first I spread a load of pva on the river bed and gave it a bit of poke about, not to much, to give the impression of sluggish movement, then once dried a first coat of varnish, I painted the river bed before starting with a mix of black, grey, green and brown acrylics loosely mixed to give variety of colour, the tracks been painted, and the sloppy plaster mix put over the rest of the board.

The building has had a walled yard put on with some empty beer barrels and a grubby wash on the cills etc, guttering and down pipe fixed.

Still more to do but getting there.

    Cheers, Pete.

The river has had its top coat of yacht varnish and the railsides painted.
I don,t know what happened with the yacht varnish, its got a red/brown tint, but personally I like it.

    From the other end.

And the whole point of the exercise.

Still loads to do but I,m getting there.

    Cheers, Pete.

Big strides Pete. I like the building. The barrels are very realistic.

    Starting to take shape.

Just posing at the moment, I still have to wire in the chip and speaker, I have had it running on DC to prove the chassis works ok, I want to get a 4 pin miniature plug and socket so I can separate the body and chassis for maintenance, luckily we have an electronics shop here so I can find the right one for the job.

    Pete.
